Abstract. During the 19th–20th centuries, political communication has been in the center of attention of researchers and is one of the new and very promising research objects in the field of modern linguistics. In this regard, political communication opens up new perspectives for researchers. Linguists and philosophers are attracted by how the form of speech changes, the delivery of information of a public politician to the audience. An integral component of public speech is the assessment category. Evaluation is recognized by most linguists as a universally valid and multidimensional category: it is unlikely that there is a language in which there is no concept of «good/bad». Formulating the definition of the category of assessment, we proceed from the fact that assessment is a mental act, as a result of which the attitude of the subject of assessment to the object being assessed is formed in order to identify its significance for the life of the subject.
In this article, we attempted to compare vivid and emotional public speeches from the end of the 19th–20th centuries (using the example of public political speeches of two Russian leaders P.A. Stolypin and L.I. Brezhnev), as well as identify and determine the type the assessments presented in these speeches in retrospect. The analysis allows us to conclude that the speeches of both politicians represent all three types of assessments: sensory, utilitarian and normative. Sensory assessment is still very important in Russian political speeches of the 20th century. Despite the fact that speaking about L.I. Brezhnev as an orator, one gets the impression as of a calm and cold-blooded person, it is worth considering that all his speeches were written for a politician and he read each of his speeches from a piece of paper.
Keywords: evaluation category; retrospective; classification of evaluative values; utilitarian evaluation; sensory evaluation; normative evaluation; political speech; politician
