Abstract. The article presents some results of a sociological study of the problems of domestic violence among residents of the Republic of Mordovia. Residents of the region aged 18 and older acted as the general population. As part of the study, a representative survey of 384 respondents was conducted in accordance with quotas by gender, age and place of residence. A combined technique was used, combining a traditional face-to-face survey and a computer web interview via the Google Forms platform using an interactive questionnaire in the proportion of 30 to 70 %, respectively. In our opinion, the study of the causes of the spread of domestic violence, the sources of public opinion about family violence and the identification of behavioral patterns in direct encounter with domestic violence is due to the high latency of the problem both at the level of the individual, family, and society as a whole.

In Russian society, victims of domestic violence are considered primarily children and spouse/partner, but often the objects of abusive relationships are equally husbands/partners, elderly relatives, disabled people.

The author considers the main causes of the spread of domestic violence and identifies the factors of reproduction of violent com-ponent: personal, socio-cultural, socio-economic and legal. It was determined that public opinion about the causes of the prevalence of abuse in the family correlates with gender, age, level of education and place of residence. As a result of the research, the main sources of formation of public opinion about abuse in the family have been identified. These include, first of all, mass media and communications, actively spreading scenes of cruelty and violence. According to the survey data, the actions taken in the event of a collision with manifestations of family and domestic violence are established and on the basis of this, models of social behavior are identified.
