Abstract. In the modern world, when intercultural communication, which is a multi-faceted phenomenon with a value and activity nature, comes out on top, phraseological units with a component of color designation help to reveal the national specifics of different cultures. Analyzing such works related to phraseological units, the author brings additional, important information in understanding the linguistic-color fragment of the language picture of the world and adds knowledge about the features of the relationship between language and thinking.

It can be noted that the problems of color meanings are not sufficiently developed on the material of phraseological units of the English language, which makes the problem of research relevant.

In work the analysis was applied to nominative language structures with the meaning of color terms. The author’s classification is proposed based on lexical and semantic criteria, taking into account metaphorical images of color nominations. This is a new term for the color terms of «Svetovrachene». The material for analysis is phraseological units extracted from English-Russian phraseological dictionaries using a continuous sampling method. The corpus of examples consists of 917 phraseological units. The article contributes to the development of the study of phraseological units. The practical value of the article is due to the fact that the proposed results open up opportunities for studying the lexical and semantic features of color in phraseological units.

Based on the materials of dictionaries, the number of color phrases was revealed – 917, classifying which it turned out that 690 are metaphorically expressed by images of the external world and 227 color phrases are images of the human personosphere.

Metaphorically grouping color phrases of the group «the external world of man» it turned out that it is represented by the subgroups object, color, nature, animal, abstract concept, day, name, geometric shapes, sign, media, light, fire, etc. In turn, the group «human personosphere» is expressed by the following values: activity, physiology, mental state, description and behavior of a person.
