Abstract. With the start of the special military operation, the Western media actualized the ideas of «decolonization of Russia», accusing it of imperial goals and calling for the fragmentation of the country as a way to destroy Russian imperialism. In the context of the aggravation of the geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the countries of the West and the United States, the North Caucasus is once again becoming an object of attention of destructive forces that do not abandon attempts to use the region to undermine Russia. The purpose of this article is to analyze the North Caucasian segment of the public discourse on the «decolonization» of the peoples of the North Caucasus, to identify the narrative part of the discourse, the main positions of its participants, and the attitude of the region’s inhabitants to the ideas of «liberation». The authors of the article reveal the influence of foreign policy factors on the North Caucasian segment of public discourse, in particular, the participation of Ukrainian media in it and the reaction to the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023. An analysis of Telegram channels involved in broadcasting the policy of decolonization of the North Caucasus to the region made it possible to divide them into two main categories: active-aggressive and passive-aggressive. It has been revealed that actively aggressive channels, which grossly ignore the real state of interethnic relations in the country and the nature of Russian federalism, cause an equally rude public reaction of rejection. This conclusion is confirmed by the analysis of 1969 comments on the video «Ultimatum to Moscow. The North Caucasus demanded independence from Russia». The authors of the article conclude that there is a much greater danger of passive-aggressive channels present in the information space of the North Caucasus Federal District, restrained in anti-Russian rhetoric, but using the historical and traumatic context, the ideas of «genocides», assimilation and threats to their national culture, which do not contribute to the strengthening of Russian identity at all.
