Abstract. The article analyzes the conceptual metaphors in the English-language sports discourse. The metaphor is studied as a cognitive mechanism that allows us to understand human perception and thinking. The authors focus on identifying the specifics of the functioning of creative metaphors and on describing interpretative mechanism of conceptual metaphors in the English-language sports discourse.

The source of the analyzed material was the English-language sports blog, article and report on UEFA Euro 2016. One of the most common with creative metaphors is a sports discourse: extrapolating the characteristics of one concept to another makes it possible for creators to describe the “real” picture of a sporting event, to convey its entertainment, creating compelling images and emphasizing moments. As a result of the study, the authors come to the conclusion that the use of creative metaphors is due to the conceptual connection between the conceptual spheres, their contextual accessibility and the metaphorical choice of the author, which is determined by the pragmatic components of the text and its author. When describing a picture of a sporting event or the actions of players at a football match, creative metaphors construct and convey new meanings, give a certain assessment, focus the attention of the recipients on certain aspect, create a comic image and a humorous effect. This article is part of a dissertation research dedicated to the study of conceptual metaphors in Russian-language and English-language sports discourse.
