Abstract. The article analyzes the social practices of learning foreign languages by students. The authors note the increased importance of language skills for the successful professional career of modern specialists in the context of globalization and internationalization of all spheres of public life. The main functions of this type of scientific activity were analyzed: communicative, socio-cultural, motivational, and the function of personal development. Using the questionnaire method, the authors investigate the educational trajectories of modern students in the study of foreign languages. The empirical basis of the study was the data of a survey conducted among students of socio-economic areas of training of the Kuban State Technological University. The results of the survey allowed us to draw the following conclusions. Students are aware of the relevance of learning foreign languages in the current social conditions. The most studied and popular language remains English. According to the self-assessment of more than half of the students, their knowledge of a foreign language does not exceed the basic entry level, which is clearly not enough for a modern professional. The system of motivation of respondents to learn the language equally contains both external and internal factors. A significant proportion of respondents use a combination of different ways and means of language acquisition (combining attending classes at an educational institution with self-study or visiting a tutor, language courses, etc.). The survey showed a higher level of satisfaction of students with the process of teaching a foreign language at a university than at school. However, in general, the percentage of those who are not satisfied with this area of their training is too high. The vast majority of students plan to study a foreign language in more depth, while a little more than a quarter of respondents are going to change the language of study. The main trend in terms of achieving this goal was the desire to use distance learning technologies.
