Abstract. The author actualizes the problem of using well-established classification schemes in relation to museumified prisons and museums in operating penitentiary institutions. The variety of objects and the lack of large-scale research in the field of museification of penitentiary institutions necessitates the correction of existing approaches and the identification of new specific classification features. In particular, the author points out the insufficiency of the profile classification, which doesn’t fully reflect the versatility of the prison-museum. Such a museum is both architectural and urban planned, technical (or even polytechnic) and industrial. The study analyzes the traditional typification of museums by departmental affiliation, the type of stored heritage and the specific of the exposition. State departmental museums are considered in detail as the most numerous group of Russian prison museums. Special attention is paid to the structure of the exposition, the visiting mode and the initiators of these institutions. Consistently considering the classification features of prisons-museums, the author comes to the conclusion about their close relationship and suggests specific criteria to prison-museums, such as the coverage of the historical period and the time frame of its creation It is also proposed to consider the location of prison-museums and the range of services provided as classification criteria. In confirmation of the significance of the classification analysis carried out, the author speaks of a large number of prisons and pre-trial detention facilities located in the central part of Russian cities. Many of these institutions are located in buildings with a centuries-old history and, after their liquidation, are subject to museumification. This means that the problem of typification of prison museums will not lose its relevance for a long time, and classification schemes will need to be supplemented and corrected.
