Abstract. Yakuts have been engaged in hunting since ancient times, the main type of food of the people was the meat of animals, birds and fish, hunting provided them with clothing. The Yakut hunting language is a rich and expressive professional language, but, unfortunately, today it is actually under threat of extinction.
The article examines the hunting vocabulary used in the work of the Yakut writer-front-line soldier Timofey Smetanin «Stories of the hunter Meheelecheen». The author has established that the stories use terms, semi-terms, words and expressions belonging to the professional jargon of hunters, colloquial hunting speech and dialect speech of hunters, expressed by nouns, verbs, and stable phrases, and phraseological units. The purpose of this study is to identify lexico-semantic groups of hunting vocabulary used in the work. The relevance of the study lies in the fact that currently the Yakut language lacks a comprehensive description and a professional lexicographic dictionary of the hunting language. Recently, in the Yakut language, there has been a loss of part of the lexical stock, including special vocabulary as a hunting language.
As a result of the analysis, the hunting vocabulary is grouped into thirteen lexico-semantic groups: (1) designations of hunters’ actions and the results of their activities; (2) descriptions of the habits of animals and birds observed during hunting in the forest; (3) nominations of birds, groups of birds and animals; (4) designations of hunting techniques and methods; (5) names of special clothing, shoes and equipment of hunters; (6) names of hunting accessories, their parts and equipment; (7) designations of hunters and their assistants; (8) designations of body parts and internal organs of animals and birds; (9) names of types of meat of animals or birds and specific food of hunters and fishermen; (10) names of hunting buildings and their devices; (11) geographical features of the area; (12) transmission of sounds of the surrounding world; 1(3) figurative representations of the movements of animals and birds.
The author comes to the conclusion that the national picture of the world is reflected in the hunting vocabulary. The writer Timofey Smetanin, with the help of a variety of hunting vocabulary, managed to convey knowledge about the traditional features of hunting, the hunter’s attitude to nature. To date, it is extremely relevant to work on a detailed lexicographic description of the Yakut hunting language.
