Abstract. The article analyzes statistical data posted on the official website of the Federal State Statistics Service for the Altai Territory and the Altai Republic in order to study the influence of socio-economic factors on the demographic situation in towns and cities of the Altai Territory in 2018–2022.

The study revealed that the demographic situation in large and large cities of the Altai Territory (Barnaul, Biysk, Rubtsovsk) is becoming more urgent, which is associated with a decrease in population. This situation is associated with a decrease in the birth rate and an increase in mortality in 2019–2021. and the fact that migration population growth is not sufficient to balance the population in the cities of the Altai Territory. And starting from 2021, the demographic situation is complicated by a decrease in the migration growth rate, especially in the city of Barnaul (-7,4 ‰). It was also revealed that socio-economic conditions in large and large cities of the Altai Territory (Barnaul, Biysk, Rubtsovsk) are acquiring favorable features.

It is noted that the ongoing positive trends in the dynamics of a complex of socio-economic factors in large and large cities of the Altai Territory (Barnaul, Biysk, Rubtsovsk) will certainly have an impact on demographic processes after some time, since the principle of inertia (or lag) works.

The article notes that the transition to an optimal type of population reproduction requires the inclusion of active demographic policy measures and conducting research in line with identifying significant relationships between socio-economic factors and indicators characterizing the demographic situation in towns and cities of the Altai Territory.
