Abstract. The article gives an overview of the notion of paratext and paratranslation as increasingly important consideration for many lines of research in Translation Studies. Despite their importance, paratexts have not been tried and tested in translation, where there is a need of such studies, a new perspective of translation, able to gap theory and practice. The article is, in fact, a compendium of several of the seminal ideas debated by famous and budding researchers – G. Genette, J.Y. Frias who coined the terms paratext and paratranslation, Tahir-Gürçağlar, R. Dimitriu, E. McRae, I. Bilodeau, H. Haroon, Xia, Sun, etc. Paratranslation is treated as a reference to the physical or virtual spatiotemporal area occupied by translators and a methodological tool for the study of paratextual elements in translation. This analysis shows how paratexts construct reality for the translated text, influenced by power relations, social, cultural settings and socio-political context. The researchers also manifest that the translator could become a paratextual element himself by channeling and shaping the perception, reception and assimilation of the translated text in target culture. It becomes clear that, thanks to the concept of paratranslation, translators can vindicate their visibility and speak their minds.
