Abstract. Russian folk costume as a whole plays the role of a non-verbal language that conveys certain cultural information characteristic of a certain historical time. Currently, ethnic groups are becoming interested in their root tradition in culture as a response to globalizatio. The multivariance of the functioning of the costume in culture, in its constant involvement in the dynamics of cultural and historical development, allows us to talk about the costume as a kind of universal culture. The costume, expressing the individuality of the ethnic group, is modified along with the person and human society. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the impact of socio-economic changes on the artistic traditions of Russian peasant folk costume of the XVII–XIX centuries. The analysis of the artistic traditions of Russian folk peasant costume from antiquity to the twentieth century is carried out. The artistic features of the costume, the incongruity of the existence of the folk costume with the epochs, the change in the artistic image of the Russian peasant costume under the influence of socio-economic changes are revealed. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that a constructive change has been determined in the cut of composite Russian women’s peasant shirts and decoration with protective embroidery in various historical periods from antiquity to the twentieth century. If earlier the communicative function provided information links characteristic of each ethnic group in the field of culture, that is, initially, according to the artistic traditions of the Russian folk peasant costume, it was possible to determine belonging to a certain genus, social status, age, and locality, by the end of the 19th century, with the development of trade relations, the invasion of foreigners, with the advent of the textile industry, sewing machines, this communicative function faded away. Russian Russian peasant folk costume artistic traditions perform tasks such as the preservation of the cultural code of the Russian people through costume, aesthetic education, as well as value-orientation, communicative, hedonistic, prognostic functions.
