Abstract. The article deals with the thorough analysis of the text of the Total Dictation in German taking into account the linguistic, cultural and linguo-didactic aspects. On the basis of the review of scientific literature, the author describes the dictation text as a cultural phenomenon and also as a didactic tool to monitor the development of foreign language listening, writing and speaking skills as well as to increase motivation for learning German. The author illustrates the theoretical background, summarizing her long-term experience as a Tolles Diktat organizer in a higher educational institution and provides details of this culturally educational event and the characteristics of the Text.
The article reveals the relationship between the semantic organization of a foreign language text and the success of its comprehension. The elements of the text are considered in detail at the lexical, grammatical, spelling levels, all of which contribute to or complicate listening comprehension. Internationalisms, familiar proper names and other frequent realities, everyday vocabulary are highlighted by the author as elements facilitating the perception of a foreign language text. Obsolete, specialized, literary, low-frequency everyday vocabulary are regarded as text elements that add complexity. Using the example of three B1 level texts given as part of the Tolles Diktat in 2020–2022 the author also analyzes bookish grammatical structures, clericalisms, archaic cases and complicated sentences. Spelling and punctograms are also generalized as a factor of frequent errors in writing the Tolles Diktat. As an example for conducting the Total Dictation in German, the author offers the work of V. Kaminer, explaining her choice by content, cultural, historical and semantic characteristics of the text.
