Abstract. The article is devoted to innovative approaches to the contents of the course on Culture-through-language Studies, illustrated with authentic materials. Touching upon the role of stereotypes in intercultural communication the author analyzes the topics of language and culture sources through texts and videos. Studying various opinions of modern linguists about the influence of media on communicative models and peculiarities of information perception as well as teaching the online course Deutschlandlabor (Goethe-Institut, Deutsche Welle) to students taking the course of German as a Second Foreign Language the author regards video materials as an effective tool for learning about the concepts of the German language and culture (Kuscheltiere, Geld).

Translators or interpreters are bound to have communicative failures due to the lack of socio-cultural experience. The article analyses the change of didactic emphasis from informational to cultural instruction, when the goals shift from teaching the key characteristics of the country and stages of social development to overcoming cultural stereotypes and forming competences through modelling intercultural situations. The author comes to the conclusion about the necessity to complement the course with culture-related videos which would enhance students’ learning about the key concepts of language and culture as well as improve their experience in verbal and non-verbal communication. The results of both the course supported with the use of the video materials from Deutschlandlabor and the students’ reviews lead to the conclusion about the effectiveness of the materials and of the approach to studying culture in general.
