Abstract. The paper deals with some aspects of language processing the interpretative potential of the media and political discourse. The research focuses on assessment variation of official political greetings. The linguistic material was taken from Russia’s President V. Putin greetings (the October 2019 Teacher’s Day greeting) and the USA President D. Trump’s speeches (January 2019 New Year twitter-greeting). The research is aimed at analyzing how a language reveals elements of principal ideologically relevant meanings that are broadcast to society. The main goal of the research is to decipher the techniques used to form social interpretative basis to consolidate public opinions and improve mechanisms for governing society. The analysis of the linguistic material made it possible to denote the key features of official political greetings as tools to work out the interpretative potential of the media and political discourse: official political greetings can structure socially relevant ideas, i.e. to be used as a source of a message, showing the vital indicators for the society’s development; multiple implicit media citation of official political greetings provoke assessment variation that can distort the key ideas of the original text; the interpretative potential of official political greetings as an element of the media and political discourse depends on the way the target audience is defined: merging the target audience into a nation-size group helps to boost up the ideological potential; breaking up the stereotype stylistic scheme of a greeting followed by an explicit fragmentation of the target audience may decrease the potential of a greeting as an ideological unit or may provoke appearing some new ideas relevant for the society. The paper is a part of the dissertation research.
