Abstract. The article is devoted to identifying the difficulties in business intercultural communication of design engineers involved in international construction projects of petrochemical and oil refineries. On the basis of theoretical analysis and practical experience the difficulties that have a negative impact on communication have been identified. Communication problems are classified into the following groups: differences in regulations in the field of engineering hazardous industrial objects in the countries whose representatives are engineers; communication barriers, including language barriers and cultural barriers. In the article the problems in communicating with foreign colleagues in terms of correctly transferring the meaning of technical terms and concepts are discussed. They are used in the regulatory and legal framework of the Russian Federation to ensure safety at hazardous industrial facilities. The correct understanding is indispensable for implementation and stable operation of construction facilities of large production enterprises of petrochemical and oil-refining industry of the country. It is spoken in details about communication barriers, possible difficulties and ways of their solution. It was determined that cultural barriers are caused by the lack of partners full understanding because of belonging to different cultures. After analyzing the issue of interaction and theoretical base allowed to formulate ways of solving difficulties in terms of improving and achieving a full understanding of the normative documentation and overcoming the direct communication barriers. Recommendations are given to employ clear and accessible language forms, to develop intercultural literacy for solving the problems in communication. The need is stressed to demonstrate respect for communication partner in the implementation of projects and to use effective ways of making contact for successful business intercultural interaction of design engineers.
