Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of writing, which is one of the oldest artifacts of culture. Writing can be considered both as a speech genre, as one of the main communication mechanisms, and as a cultural tradition. Being the main unit of a separate type of culture, it influenced the literary process, both acting as an artistic image, and initiating the emergence of the epistolary genre. Especially interesting was the artistic embodiment of writing in children’s literature, one of the most important functions of which is the educational function, involving the development of traditions by the younger generation.
The author of the article analyzes the phenomenon of writing on the material of the book by the Dutch writer Toon Tellegen «Letters only for their own». The research was conducted at the junction of several scientific fields using the principle of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of cultural phenomena as a methodological basis. As stages of analysis, the author uses such elements of the culture of writing as the addressee, the addressee and the text.
The author highlighted the following. Firstly, writing in the artistic interpretation of the Dutch writer acquires special significance, performing several functions at once. It is a means of communication and a means of solving one’s own internal problems. In addition, it contributes to the formation and preservation of a system of spiritual and moral values.
Secondly, the addressee, as well as the addressee of the letter, can be any real or fictional being or phenomenon. A letter can be written even to the letter itself.
Thirdly, the text of the letter is multidimensional in its incarnations: it can be joyful, fierce, growling, smelling of a rose, written on water or in the sky and, most importantly, alive.
The author of the article considers the artistic embodiment of the essential characteristic of writing, defining it through the concept of cultural memory, the quintessence of human experience expressed through the word.
