Abstract. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the linguistic features of the media texts of the website of the popular newspaper «Izvestia» over the past three years (2020–2022), reflecting the processes of democratization of the language at the present time, in order to present a linguistic portrait of time, which is understood as a reflection at this stage of the functioning of the language of the preferred forms of expression of the world perception, the linguistic taste of contemporaries. The relevance of the study is confirmed by the fact that it presents an analysis of the linguistic features of media texts during the coronavirus pandemic, the tense political situation and spontaneous processes in society, which undoubtedly left an imprint on all spheres of the language.
The authors of the article explain the reasons for the functioning of democratization phenomena in the language of media texts and come to the conclusion that the socio-cultural situation affects the ways of presenting the material in the media text, the use of linguistic means corresponding to the era, reflecting those processes of language democratization that are on a par with the processes of democratization of modern society, representing a kind of linguistic portrait of time. The emotionality of the reaction to what is happening is reflected in the use of expressive, evaluative means, the manifestation of speech aggression; saving of speech means — in abbreviations; freedom of expression of the author’s opinion — in the language game, dialogization of syntax; emancipation — in the inclusion of colloquial vocabulary and phraseology, jargon; the desire for renewal — in active neologization; internationalization (language globalization) — in foreign language borrowings.
To identify the processes of language democratization in the media texts of the «Izvestia» newspaper website, the method of continuous sampling, the method of linguistic description using the techniques of quantitative and component analysis, the methods of linguistic observation, interpretation, systematization and comparison of linguistic phenomena were used. The sample size was 580 linguistic units.
