Abstract. This article is devoted to the analysis of color associations associated with the vocal system of the Russian language. Color associations are understood as such connections and relationships that arise in a person’s mind in connection with the utterance of vowel sounds.

The relevance of the work is due to the need to study the semantic connections and relationships between the vowel sounds of the Russian language and the shades of the color spectrum that the pronunciation of sounds causes in human consciousness.

The study of associative connections is one of the important, not fully explored aspects of the study of the sound side of language and finds practical application as one of the means of effective transmission of the author’s artistic thought, as a means of creating figures associated with sound recording, alliteration and assonance.

The article describes an associative experiment in the field of perception of vowel sounds of the Russian language. Two types of surveys related to the color perception of sounds were conducted with students of the Faculty of Chuvash and Russian Philology. The first survey assumed a free associative response. In the second type of survey, the respondents were offered six colors to correlate them with vowel sounds. In addition, a survey was conducted on such characteristics as «beautiful — ugly» and «light — dark» in the perception of sounds.

During the research, the color properties of the vowel sounds of the Russian language were established, possible reasons for the correspondence between vowel sounds and colors were considered and reasoned.
