Abstract. This article analyzes the communicative and pragmatic characteristics of chatbot text in scientific discourse, based on I.R. Galperin’s text categories and V.E. Morozov’s strategies, J. Austin’s criteria for successful communicative acts, and G.P. Grice’s principle of cooperation. The authors present the results of an experiment using an educational chatbot in the research work of students at Tyumen State University. Thirty second-year students majoring in Linguistics participated in the experiment. A lecturer contributed to the chatbot’s development, preparing and providing a catalog of authoritative open-access scientific sources. To prevent data falsification, the chatbot was not given internet access.

The study revealed that the main categories of chatbot text in scientific discourse include informativeness, articulation, integration, and completeness. The chatbot’s responses revealed strategies consistent with the author of the scientific text. The interaction between a student and a chatbot is examined from the perspective of the success of the communicative act, in accordance with J. Austin’s criteria and G.P. Grice’s principle of cooperation. All success criteria, with the exception of sincerity, are met. The implementation of the cooperation principle in communication between the student and the educational chatbot is examined.

The authors conclude that the communicative-pragmatic aspect of the chatbot’s text is realized through the chatbot’s motivational setting, aimed at consulting students on writing a coursework paper in linguistics.
