Abstract. The article attempts to substantiate and show the capabilities of the chronotope as a tool for city diagnostics. The chosen angle of research is due to the current demand for a transdisciplinary approach to the study of the city, which involves a combination of management practices and scientific theories, including cultural ones. The work is based on integrative and analytical methods.

The city is considered in the article in its “middle life” as a space of meanings. The plurality of semantic realities inherent in it is revealed through their inherent temporal topos configurations. The chronotope, linking the spatial-temporal and semantic criteria into a single structure, in the author’s opinion, allows one to diagnose various qualitative states of the city’s existence. The chronotope is an integrative phenomenon, which allows us to talk about its various invariants (profane, global, innovative, etc.).

The author focuses his attention on the historical and cultural chronotope, which reflects the unfolding of historical time in the space of the city, representing the spatio-temporal foundations of the existence of the past, given by the mechanism of cultural memory and expressed in the specific conditions of its present. Completeness, concentration and communicativeness are proposed as indicators of the historical and cultural chronotope, which make it possible to carry out culturological diagnostics of the city. Completeness reflects what past, in what volume and how it is actualized in the present for self-justification of the city. Concentration indicates the level of disunity of the city in terms of the “centrality” of the place, determined by its historical past. Communicativeness shows the effectiveness of the dialogue between the city and its inhabitants in terms of “experiencing the past” and identification mechanisms.

Diagnostics of the city using the proposed indicators of the historical and cultural chronotope allows, in our opinion, to assess its semantic content from the point of view of threats and opportunities for its further functioning, to determine the basic guidelines that can become the basis of programs and projects related to the strategies of its development, designing the urban environment, creating a positive image.
