Abstract. The article deals with the concept of «cognitive map» in relation to the information space, which has undergone significant changes with the spread of the Internet.
The purpose of the study: to study the features of the formation and content of cognitive maps in modern students.
In the course of the study, the analysis of students’ oral speeches and written surveys was carried out. The main attention was paid to the skills and techniques of working with information, the peculiarities of thinking, and existence in the information space.
The information space and the technologies of existence in it are changing significantly with the ubiquity of the Internet, which requires the development of new ways of forming ideas about this space. Cognitive maps of the information space — a necessary element of purposeful activity in modern culture-are formed in young people narrow and incorrect.
Under the influence of the peculiarities of generating and structuring information on the Internet, the thinking of a reference nature is formed (used to escape from the main subject through numerous links) and there is a need for new language forms (more capacious and expressive), which today are memes. There is also a clear imbalance between the objective and the subjective in favor of the latter.
In the perception of young people, the information space is almost entirely concentrated on the Internet. This leads to some changes in the way young people think and perceive the world. The education system cannot have a decisive impact on the processes of forming cognitive maps of the information space, since their foundations are laid even before a person enters the education system.
To correct the processes of forming cognitive maps of the information space, it is necessary to introduce disciplines aimed at the development of information culture and literacy into the educational process.
Keywords: cognitive map (mental map); information space; modernization of education; cognitive cultural studies; reference thinking; meme; subjectivity
