Abstract. Researchers of the Khanty language, addressing the subject of the interrogative pronoun, cited a different number of tokens, indicated a different meaning of these pronouns. This article discusses the characteristic of the substantive-adjective pronoun muj on the material of the Kazym dialect of the Khanty language. If necessary, examples are given from the Surgut dialect of the Khanty language. This article is part of the author’s dissertation research.

The material for publication was a selection of examples of folklore and literary texts, vocabulary articles of the Khanty language, as well as questionnaires collected from informants, native speakers of the Khanty language.

The article clarifies the meaning of the pronoun muj in the Khanty language, meaning ‘that’ a pronoun is used with a verb or verb group, with a meaning ‘which’ with a noun phrase as a single or compound definition.

For the first time, it is described that in narrative sentences the pronoun of muj as an element of a pair word or as part of homogeneous members of a sentence is used in the meaning of a definitive pronoun. The pronoun muj can be used in a negative function as a lexical means of negation. Also, the pronoun of muj = әn with a personal possessive suffix is a grammatical means of expressing negation, while the personal possessive suffix changes the meaning of the verb. The muj pronoun is used as a function of the indefinite pronoun, correlated with the subject, action, unknown to the speaking person. When muj is combined with nouns with the semantics of quantity, degree of arat, kєm the pronoun takes on the meaning ‘what’.

The results of the study can be used in writing scientific grammar, dictionaries of the Khanty language, in comparative studies of related and different structural languages.
