Abstract. The article focuses on the systemic analysis of intraword italics which is based on Russian and English texts. Intraword italics is a relatively novel phenomenon in linguistic graphemics which has not yet come to the spotlight, judging from the scarce number of available theoretical studies. It can be explained by the peripheral nature of this technique as a necessity to mark the contrast in one part of the word is a rare occurrence. Besides, intrword italics has a wide range of applications and we can find the examples of its use in texts belonging to different discourses. Intraword italics has twofold uses: general linguistic ones (not related to specific dicourses or contexts) and the ones for specific purposes (for example, in the linguistic discourse intraword italics is used as a means to mark linguistic material. Itraword italics can be encountered in scientific, philosophical, literary works and in mass media articles. The study shows that the functionality of italicizing a segment of the word can be extremely various, however, this technique is still perceived, from the perspective of language usage, as unstandardized or insufficiently conventionalized. The author distinguishes the types of intraword italics in accordance with the territory of its validity (a separate letter, a combination of letters – a syllable, morpheme), describes its functions in the text (marking the stress, putting oral emphasis, featuring the peculiarities of the character’s pronunciation, actualizing the inner form of the word, actualizing parts of words in the linguistic context, language play, a technique in design), conducts a comparative analysis and also defines the reasons for the choice of specific forms and ways of using intraword italics.
