Abstract. The article is devoted to the issue of the influence of social trends on linguistic processes. It analyses the content of leading Western online editions published on Russian-language Internet sites in order to determine the role of English in the Russian language system and the degree of influence of Western culture on the life of Russian society. It is common knowledge, due to globalization processes, the role of English as an international language is increasing. The article attempts to analyze how this fact can affect the development of the Russian language. Special attention is paid to the study of ways of transferring proper names when translating materials of popular Western online editions from English into Russian. It should be noted that the target audience of the online editions in consideration are persons at the age from twenty to forty, who are active Internet users. They are interested in fashion trends, life of celebrities, cars, modern videogames, films, and speak English at a level allowing them to read English texts with varying degrees of reading comprehension. The analysis allows us to conclude that the method of direct transfer is one of the leading ways to transfer proper names in the translation of Internet content. This trend indicates the strengthening of the role of the English language and, consequently, the influence of modern Western culture on the life of a certain part of Russian society.
