Abstract. This article is devoted to the study of the features of the formation of semantic and socio-psychological barriers in the Anglo-Saxon linguistic and cultural space.

The relevance of the study is expressed in the need for a more detailed study of the features of the emergence, disappearance and leveling of language barriers of socio-psychological and communicative types. The practical significance of the study is determined by the possibility of using the materials of the work in the further study of the nature of socio-psychological barriers and communication barriers on the example of English (British linguistic culture).

The purpose of the study is to reveal the essence of socio-psychological and semantic barriers that are entrenched in stereotypical models that include unstructured elements of the English-speaking culture.

In the course of the study, a complex of linguistic and sociological methods was used. Linguistic: method of linguistic observation and description, comparative linguistic method, lexico-semantic method, contextual method. Sociological: the method of generalization of characteristics, the method of paired comparisons, the method of ideal types.

The result of the study was the definition of the essence of semantic barriers that arise on the basis of the distortion of universal codes, accent and dialect, as well as confirmation of the key features of semantic barriers in the English language that arise and are formalized due to the distortion of the primary and secondary semantics of words or cultural concepts.

The position on the immanent subject-object asymmetry in the process of encoding/decoding multilevel semantic structures, which creates the basis for the emergence of numerous barriers, remains debatable. analysis, discourse analysis and elements of hermeneutics. The polydiscursive space of intracultural and intercultural types of interaction is based on the abstraction of the delimitation of dialectal and ethno-national differences in set expressions built on the basis of a conceptual metaphor. This contradiction gives grounds to believe that the dialectical, linguocultural features of speech, as well as the primary and secondary semantics of the communicator’s speech, create both primary semantic barriers and establish certain patterns by which these barriers can be leveled.

Based on the results of the study, we can say that the main way to level the semantic barrier at the stage of its formation can be to follow the key linguocultural principles of communication: thinking through the topic, elocution, the ratio of knowledge and perception of the language text, focusing on the recipient’s language norms in all the variety of possible options and invariants.

The practical application of the results of the study can be aimed at further studying the most significant principles and features of the formation of the linguocultural foundations of speech interaction between representatives of a foreign culture. In the methodological aspect, the results of the study can be used in classes in linguistic disciplines in a higher educational institution.

Keywords: communicative barrier; functional style; linguocultural concept; explicatory potential; apperception; objectification/deobjectification of meaning; associative series
