Abstract. The article summarizes various theoretical approaches to the study of society, gives their brief characteristics, both from a formal standpoint and an assessment of the content of these theories. The general crisis in sociology and the need to create qualitatively different social paradigms are noted. The main prevailing approaches to the study of “expectations” and a historical retrospective of the latter, from A. Tocqueville to modern concepts by J. Burgoon, M. Burgoon, J. Eccles, V. Vroom, are examined. The role of “expectations” in neo-behaviourism, in the psychological concept and in the study of human motivation is noted. The relationship of role theory and ethnomethodology with the theory of the “Society of Expectations” is indicated. Also indicated is the lack of attention to this topic from sociologists based on assessments of the literature studied, despite the widespread use of the term “expectations”. The prospects for the development of existing directions in the theories of “expectations” are estimated and original directions in solving the revealed contradictions are proposed. It is shown that most of the studies of the last period are located at the junction of various sciences due to the complexity and complexity of the main element of the social system – the person – who has mutual expectations in relation to other elements – individuals, groups, society as a whole. The relevance of “expectations” in the theoretical justification of society as a system and the systematic nature of its structural elements based on mutual expectations is assessed. The fundamental role of expectations in any systems – social, biological, cybernetic and others – is emphasized. A new definition of society as a system of mutual social expectations is given. New terms are introduced and their definitions are given: “Society of expectations”, theory of “Society of expectations”, sociology of expectations.

Keywords: social expectations; expectations; «Society of expectations»; the sociology of expectations; the system of mutual social expectations; the system of the expectations; mutual expectations
