Abstract. In this article author discuss symbolic appearance of railways in art culture. Key meanings of railway’s art image are highlighted from cinema, arts, literature in this context. In literature railways are used as a symbol of alternate moving and calls, unpredictable situations, fellow passengers changing, and helps to insight human’s life. In theatre art this insight is showing by shifting scene to railway space. As a result image of railways insert some new meanings in scene and suggest new dimensions of subject understanding.

It’s also expounds railway as a way to death. Such a symbols came from folklore and now have an interpretation in modern art. In classical Russian literature there is a lot of deaths under train’s wheels, and a hardware is shown as a mythological pestilential beast. Railways can be also a presentation of borderline between past and future. A baseline is a train station. In this place traveler make a life choice, take farewell of backward life and rush in future.

Motives of leavings is very widespread in art. Different fates and experiences are concentrated in one place, in one time, this moment became full of emotions and very interesting for authors. Farewell settings analyzed through an example of literature, arts, sculpture, cinema images.
Art image of railways fulfilled with different meanings, but the important one is semantics of way/road concept. A trope of crossroads is mirrored in railway station — as a place of appointments and break ups, selections a way to go, life changings. In general railways in art became a symbol of spiritual transformation of all humanity, living in industrial civilization, and also of a one man, occurred in railway space. Analysis, made for this article, let us to make a conclusion about how much images and senses railways have in art culture, and how wide and stable it is.
