Abstract. The article is written as a part of the PhD research of the speech etiquette in two bilingual areas of Northern India and Catalonia. The article is dedicated to the investigation of the social status identification as a factor that influences the linguistic choice in the bilingual situations of Catalonia and Northern India. As a main method we use the frequency analysis of English, Hindi (Northern India), Spanish and Catalan (Catalonia) etiquette units that are normally appear in typical situations connected with the social status parameter. As a result of the investigation 3 strategies have been detected responsible for the language choice along with the connection between the etiquette formulas and the social status of the listener. The first strategy shows that the language choice can be indeed strongly determined by the parameter of social status. The second tendency demonstrates the possibility of partial influence of the parameter. The third tendency is based on the ignorance of the social status factor. And moreover, it was discovered the difference in the realization of the language choice caused by different grade of importance of the social status for each language. So English and Spanish are more connected with this parameter than Hindi and Catalan.
