Abstract. This article will consider the problems of the possibility of using myths as a historical, philosophical, philological source, and also substantiates the expediency of such a comprehensive study to obtain valuable information about the people of the ancient world. The relevance of the article is determined by the need to reconstruct the past for an improved understanding of the present. The purpose of the article is to substantiate a comprehensive method in the study of myths to recreate a more complete, objective and visual picture of the world. Historical experience, supported by a philosophical worldview and artistic embodiment, appears to contemporaries in full, allowing them to get the most detailed and vivid picture of value and life preferences. Hermeneutical research of texts is the best way to dive into the archetypes, the origins of time to obtain the necessary information about it. Thanks to hermeneutical excavations, the blank spots of history were studied and filled in. Of particular value are the myths studied through the prism of hermeneutical phenomenology, opening the veil of time and allowing you to get to know the past better. They concentrate the wisdom of ancient people, their moral priorities, as well as evaluation criteria. The myths are also valuable reflection of the spirit of the times. The article for the first time examines Dagestan myths, more precisely myths from highland villages, passed from mouth to mouth and preserved in the legends of antiquity. The role of myths in revealing the specifics of the nature of the highlanders, their characters, as well as in describing the events of bygone times is explained by the purpose of recreating the socio-cultural identity, so important for modern civilization. The need for ethnic histories and in-depth study of their essence is supported not only by the relevance of this kind of research, but also by the tasks that modern reality sets before us.
