Features of studying of the lexico-semantic field in the literary text (on the example of the lexico-semantic field of moral assessment in the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky «The Brothers Karamazov»)

Abstract. In the article the technique of the literary text’s lexico-semantic field’s structure research that was developed by the author while studying moral and evaluative vocabulary in literary texts of F.M. Dostoevsky is described. Tasks and principles of the research of the lexico-semantic field in the text differ from tasks and the principles of its studying on language material therefore work with the lexico-semantic field as text structure requires the special approach considering, on the one hand, indissoluble connection of the text with the common cultural conception fixed in the language, on the other hand – supreme importance of differences between a text field and a common-language field. These differences allow to record the significant phenomena of an author’s language picture of the world at the level of lexicon, to compare author’s and common-language conceptual spheres.

The technique offered in article describes four obligatory investigation phases of the lexico-semantic field in the text: definition of a central zone of the field, studying of common-language units of the field in the text, studying of individual and author’s units and complex studying of units of the field in key fragments of the text. The author proves that during the work even with common-language units of the field in the text the constant turn to a context is necessary, she offers possible ways to check whether the unit relates to the explored field and what place it takes in its structure taking into account a literary context. The last stage of studying assumes the reconstructing analysis of the text establishing a function of the explored field and also the role of the ideas and images it represents in the text.

Each of four stages is illustrated with example units of the lexico-semantic field of moral assessment in the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky The Brothers Karamazov, however the described technique is universal, applicable to various fields both in literary and non-literary texts.
