Abstract. The paper deals with the problem of Russian culture dialogue with the “other”. This issue is represented in the frames of reception of the Spanish painting images in works by Ye.Ye. Moiseyenko and T.T. Salahov as the painters of the “severe style”. The topicality of the study is conditioned by the need of scientific understanding dialogue of cultures as a phenomenon which results in creating new cultural artifacts as well as in forming the image of the “other” in the space of the own culture. The study is novel in analyzing the issue not on base of particular works but in the common context of the paintings created by the painters of the “severe style”. The author of the paper studies such pictures belonging to the Soviet and post-Soviet periods as “In El Greco’s Workroom” by Ye.Ye. Moiseyenko, “Chair. Picasso’s Palette”, “Varvara’s Portrait in Picasso’s Dress”, “Salvador Dali’s World”, “View of Cadaqués”, “Salvador Dali’s House-workroom in Cadaqués”, “Aidan the Star of the East” and some others created by T.T. Salahov. The main methods of the study are the hermeneutical and semiotic approaches.

The paper focuses on images of the personosphere of the Spanish painting which are studied in the frames of the Russian cultural tradition. These are images of El Greco, Francisco Goya, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Appealing to the images of the Spanish painters and their paintings Ye.Ye. Moiseyenko and T.T. Salahov interpret the “other”, incorporate it in the own culture.
