Abstract. The article is devoted to conflict as an actual interdisciplinary object of study. The evolution of scientific ideas about conflict as an integral part of human life is studied. Attention is drawn to «conflict», the term for a dynamically evolving phenomenon. Based on the material of dictionaries, textbooks, articles and monographs, the evolution of ideas about conflict in science and public consciousness is assessed. The definitions of the word «conflict» in different disciplinary fields are analyzed, a range of related concepts is determined and common features of the phenomenon under consideration are revealed.

Conflict is a complex multidimensional phenomenon that exist objectively in the life of every person and is defined through a collision, contradiction, opposition, confrontation and other concepts characterizing various kinds of relationship of the parties. There is a generalized evaluative characteristic of the word «conflict»: in the minds of ordinary people, conflict is usually associated with the words that have a predominantly negative meaning, and generally carries negative connotations, due to the human qualities manifested in conflict and the negative social phenomena that act as sources and consequences of various kinds of conflicts.

The transformation of perceptions of conflict phenomena affects the change in the semantics of the word «conflict». The study reveals a gradual change in the assessment of conflict: conflict begins to be seen as a natural phenomenon that does not necessarily manifest itself with a «minus» sign. There is a turn toward the positive and constructive aspects of the phenomenon under study with regard to various kinds of conflicts.

In general, the overall picture of the phenomenon under study shows that active participation in the prevention and development of conflict is currently relevant. Mechanisms for working with conflicts are being formed, and the issues of conflictological education, which involves the application of conflictological knowledge for self-construction and creation, are becoming promising. This study is necessary to examine the practice of skillful conflict management.
