Abstract. This article discusses the ways of speech portrayalization of one of the fantastic characters of the novel by M.A. Bulgakov «The Master and Margarita». This work is performed in the context of the author’s dissertation research. Active study of the language personality leads to a shift of research interest from the problems of describing the language structure to the area where the speaker becomes the center. In this context, the speech portrait of a character in a work of art is of particular interest as a representation of a special linguistic personality created by the author of the text. A character’s speech portrait is a complex system consisting of a character’s speech self-presentation («internal» speech portrayalization) and its characteristics by the author and other characters («external» speech portrayalization). Speech characteristics of the hero is an important part of the image, allowing to identify the communicative stereotypes in this particular character, including socio-group elements in the structure of the image, and the individual unique features that make the personality of the character recognizable.

Depending on the functional content of the literary text as a whole and the tasks that the writer sets for himself, within the framework of a work of art, the speech portrait of a character can perform various functions. In particular, the communicative behavior of Koroviev-Bassoon changes connotative characteristics depending on the nature of the interlocutor, in this regard, we can talk about equilibrium and disequilibrium dialogues within the novel. The lexical content of his speech is heterogeneous (emotional-expressive colloquial vocabulary, jargon, terminological and professional vocabulary, official-business style vocabulary), which is a reflection of the peculiarities of the communication situation and represents the «mask» and theatricality of the character. The communicative intentions of this character reflect its essence. Language transformations of the image throughout the novel represent the dynamics of character development: Fagot-Koroviev – knight. The language features of the analyzed character are manifested at different levels of the language: lexical, syntactic. Special attention is paid to the lexical level, since the latter reflects the peculiarities of the character’s lexicon (and its «idiostille» in General), contributing to the creation of a bright, theatrical, dynamic-image, the character’s linguistic personality, making it memorable and recognizable, determining the character’s speech self-disclosure.
