Abstract. In the article the author raises the questions relating to developing and applying new effective methods of education in the modern conditions of radical transformations in the Russian education system. In particular, the advantages that could be gained by means of modular system of training when it comes to the discipline of «Foreign language» are under discussion in the article. The relevance of the problem is that the module, as a training course, has a number of advantages over traditional methods in foreign language teaching. The author of the article pays attention, primarily, to such advantages of the modular technique as the flexibility and mobility of the module, which makes it possible to individualize the material of the module and its separate blocks in the most optimal way; another undoubted advantage is the focus of the modular approach on the stimulation of the individual work of students. The article emphasizes the need for the use of modular training in the system of professional training, where it is important for the teacher to have an opportunity to vary and diversify language tasks in a wide range. In the first place this concerns the work with vocabulary, with a specialized (technical) text, because the training material should be correlated with the main specialization of the study course of this or that educational institution. Clear benefits of modular training cannot mask, as the author notes, a number of difficulties associated mainly with the optimal selection and arrangement of the material to compose a module; intermediate and final certification test development is another problem of the same matter. Nevertheless, the conclusion is made about the prospects and efficiency of the use of modular technologies in foreign language teaching in technical universities.
