Abstract. The scientific problem of the study lies in the insufficient development of a sociological analysis of the motivational mechanisms underlying citizens’ participation in archival volunteering as a specific form of intellectual, cultural, and educational voluntary activity aimed at preserving historical and documentary heritage.

The relevance of the sociological study is обусловлена the growing public interest in volunteer participation practices related to the preservation of historical memory, the development of digital archival initiatives and crowdsourcing projects, as well as the need to identify the factors determining the sustainability of citizens’ involvement in archival volunteer activities. The study of the motivational attitudes of archival volunteers makes it possible to identify the social mechanisms of citizens’ participation in socially significant cultural and educational practices and to determine the conditions for developing effective models of interaction between archival institutions and volunteer communities.

The aim of the study is to identify the dominant motivational attitudes of archival volunteers, as well as the factors influencing the sustainability of their participation in the activities of archival institutions.

Research methods: An online survey of archival volunteers (N = 131) was conducted. The study was carried out in 2025 by the All-Russian Research Institute for Documentation and Archival Affairs using a standardized questionnaire. The sample was quota-based and formed according to respondents’ age, educational level, socio-professional status, and experience in archival volunteer activities.

The findings demonstrate the importance of an individualized approach to the organization of volunteer activities and the necessity of developing mechanisms to support the sustainable motivation of participants in archival initiatives. Prospects for further research are associated with expanding the empirical base, conducting comparative regional studies, and analyzing the influence of digital forms of participation on the motivational attitudes of archival volunteers.
