Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of morphological means of expressing comparison in unrelated languages. The objects of the study are the Mari and French languages. The Mari language belongs to the Uralic family of the Finno-Ugric group of languages and unlike French has acquired a writing system relatively recently. The first written document in French, which belongs to the Romance language group, dates back to 842. The subject of the comparative study is the category of comparison at the morphological level, in particular the comparative degree of adjectives and adverbs in the languages with different structures: Mari and French. With the descriptive method, an analysis of theoretical sources on Finno-Ugric and French linguistics was conducted. The factual material, presented by examples from fiction in the Mari and French languages, was subjected to morphological and comparative analysis. The differences identified in the study are attributed to the fact that in terms of expressing grammatical meanings Mari is characterized by a predominant use of synthetic forms, whereas French relies on analytic constructions. Furthermore, regarding morphological typology, Mari is a prominent representative of the agglutinative type, while French belongs to the inflectional type. However, Mari can also form the comparative degree using analytic forms, while French retains archaic forms constructed by synthetic means. The results of the study allow us to understand the structural differences in expressing comparative relations in Mari and French, and will help to avoid interference in intercultural communication.

Keywords: the Mari language; the French language; morphology; adjective; adverb; comparison; analyticism; synthetism
