Abstract. Zoonyms, through figurative comparisons and metaphors, reflect key cultural values and the peculiarities of the people’s worldview. Figurative comparisons with animal names for the Mari people are one of the sources of reflecting culturally significant information. This article examines comparative constructions with the nomination of the measure ‘hare’ as an object of comparison in the Mari language. In the course of the research, comparative constructions were analyzed both in Mari folklore (in proverbs, fairy tales, games) and in fiction based on the material of the National Corpus of the Mari language. The main methods of this research include: the method of linguistic description, linguistic cultural and semantic analysis. The author analyzes linguistic units in which the zoonym is considered as part of figurative comparisons, as well as texts where the nomination hare is represented as part of phraseological units. As a result of the research, constructions with constant comparisons and individual author’s figurative comparisons were revealed. It is proved that the nomination of the measure ‘hare’ in the Mari language, as part of phraseological units and figurative comparisons, is used to characterize a person’s appearance, to describe his psychological, emotional states, and physiological characteristics. In the image of a hare in the Mari language picture of the world, such typical human traits as dexterity, speed, cowardice, weakness, stupidity are represented. Among the specific features characteristic of the Mari tradition are cunning, fearlessness and courage in emergency situations.
