Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of violations of semantic adequacy of speech in written methodological discourse. The features of methodological discourse named by the author argue the importance of accurate and adequate transmission of the author’s intention in the text. The relevance of the work consists in establishing the causes of inadequate transmission of meaning, recognized as a consequence of a communicative and pragmatic failure in discourse. From the standpoint of a communicative and pragmatic approach, a failure can be considered a distorted transmission of information due to a violation of the literary norm in the speech design of the text by its addressee. A violation in speech most often contains the risk of difficulty in perceiving the meaning of a phrase or a fragment of discourse by its addressee. To determine the causes of violations of the semantic adequacy of written speech in methodological discourse, more than 900 deviations from clear and understandable speech were identified and classified on the basis of printed manuscripts of methodological materials. The facts of such deviations were grouped within the framework of the lexical and grammatical levels of the norm and characterized within the framework of the existing typology of speech errors. Four reasons for violations of semantic adequacy from the standpoint of pragmatics of the addressee of speech are named. The author came to the conclusion that the factors hindering the purpose of accessible transmission of information and its clarification are, on the one hand, linguistic in nature, since the semantic accuracy of speech is determined primarily by the correspondence of the linguistic design of thought to literary norms, and on the other hand, cognitive, directed to the information base and skills of certain speech actions of the addressee. The practical significance of the results obtained lies in identifying the most typical deviations from the norms of accurate and clear speech in methodological discourse and their characteristics.
