Abstract. The article is devoted to the consideration of the resocialization of former prisoners in the paradigm of the sociological approach. The purpose of the article is to generalize the positions existing in jurisprudence and sociology regarding the stages of social adaptation and resocialization and, on this basis, to identify those factors that may prevent the successful return to society of persons who have served their sentences in places of deprivation of liberty. It has been established that the post-penitentiary system of modern Russian society so far only reproduces crime, indirectly being the cause of recidivism: its imperfect organization in the legal and value-ideological key creates barriers to the effective integration of former prisoners into social and interpersonal relations. The difficulty of resocialization of former prisoners is also due to the loss, often irreversible, of many social ties and professional, socially useful qualities. It has been determined that in order to improve the penitentiary system and neutralize the negative consequences of recidivism for the economy and public morality, it is necessary to use existing institutional resources, because the creation of new state structures will not bring the desired result. Successful integration of those released from places of deprivation of liberty is possible in the complex application of educational, organizational, legal and socio-psychological efforts on the part of the state: all stages of social adaptation and resocialization should be controlled and/or carried out by the penitentiary inspectorate, which should actively interact with city and district administrations, trustee societies. This state structure should be assigned the functions of coordinating the activities of all bodies and services for the social adaptation and resocialization of the released, and efforts to implement these processes should unite lawyers, psychologists, sociologists and economists for the most effective results of the resocialization of former prisoners.
