Abstract. Active interest of modern linguistics to the analysis of language units following the anthropological approach determines the relevance of researching their perception by Russian native speakers. We take into consideration the fact that lawyers’ mindset, being shaped under the influence of the specific sphere — jurisprudence, and common mindset, which gets formed in the conditions of daily routine, reflect different language worldviews of Russian-speaking people, and that may be revealed through the images created while perceiving the same language units.

The article is devoted to the description of the results of a free association experiment. Within the experiment we analyzed the peculiarities of perceiving the notions united on the basis of some extralinguistic parameters — the attitude to the topic «The players in a trial courtroom» in professional and common mindset. The participants of the experiment were Russian-speaking people who have a law degree and who have no law degree. The material for the research was combined with 10 lexical units that were united into the topic group «The players in a trial courtroom». The lexical units are legal terms but tend to be used very actively beyond professional communication. The work was conducted by applying a free association experiment which aimed to research the perception of lexical units in professional and common mindset; quantitative research used to count the results of the experiment; methods of semantic analysis and description. The results of the experiment showed that lawyers’ mindset shifts the perception of the chosen notions to the subject field making the perception of legal terms more pragmatic which is different for common mindset that gives the players in a trial courtroom some particular connotation.
