Abstract. Within the framework of this publication, the issue of linguistic security is investigated. According to the author, linguistic insecurity has become an important problem in recent years for minority communities that speak official languages, for young Russians, etc. Ensuring linguistic security allows for a greater degree of linguistic security. Moreover, the author argues that linguistic security allows for social, economic and political stability. All this emphasizes the need to ensure and maintain the required level of linguistic security. It allows the state to maintain the sovereignty, social, cultural and economic security of the country. In Russia, maintaining linguistic security is a rather difficult task, since the country, being a multinational and multi-confessional country, has about 190 different nationalities, who are native speakers of more than 270 languages. At the same time, as the author emphasizes, most of them are on the verge of extinction, as they are used mainly by indigenous peoples, whose numbers are constantly declining. In this regard, the problem of the need to harmonize the interests of the Russian Federation in the study of the Russian language with the interests of indigenous peoples who need to protect their languages is relevant. The article provides a list of problems of linguistic security identified by various domestic experts. In addition to practically significant issues of ensuring linguistic security, the author notes the absence of a clearly defined conceptual apparatus. Particular attention within the framework of the issue under consideration is given to semantics — a section of linguistics that specializes in the study of meaning; various approaches to this section are given. In the final part of the article, the author formulates a conclusion regarding the most pressing problems of linguistic security.
