Abstract. This article attempts to consider the modern student’s belonging to the so-called generation Z attitude to money. It is emphasized that throughout the entire socio-historical development of Russian society, the attitude to money was rather contradictory, as indicated in sociological studies carried out by Russian scientists (M.K. Gorshkov, N.E. Tikhonov, N.N. Zarubina). Particular attention is paid to the works of N.N. Zarubina, who highlights not only the socio-economic, but also the socio-cultural functions of money. As a basis for identifying the attitude to money among modern students, a corpus of case statements (PS) was singled out, based on the fact that case statements reflect the main value meanings of culture that are included in the «cognitive consciousness» of the carriers of a particular linguocultural community. The corpus of PS offered to students included both traditional proverbs, sayings, popular expressions, and statements of famous people (scientists, writers, financiers, economists, businessmen). The analysis of the data obtained showed that, along with the rationalization of the perception of the value of money, an ambiguous attitude towards money still remains characteristic of the younger generation and does not radically differ from the traditional attitude towards money in the collective ideas of previous generations. Money is not the aim of modern students’ life, although they are a significant means to achieve their goals. Values such as love, friendship, mutual assistance are not associated by the majority of respondents with money, just as building relationships with the opposite sex is not monetized.
