Abstract. Both domestic and foreign linguists show interest in the usual and occasional ways of forming individual author’s words, and in describing their structural, typological, and functional features in artistic and journalistic texts. The authors of the article turn to the topic of individual author’s words due to their interest in active processes occurring in the Russian language and reflected not only in oral but also in written speech, in particular in regional literary texts. The material for the study was the works of the founder of Mansi literature, Yuvan Nikolaevich Shestakov, a poet and prose writer, the same age as Mansi literature, one of the most prominent representatives of this amazing people. The relevance of the work is explained by both the appeal to regional literary texts and the need to identify occasional (potential) words and describe models of new formations that contribute to understanding the specifics of linguistic thinking and the linguistic picture of the world of northern peoples. The article for the first time outlines the range of occasional (potential) language units, identifies the productive models with the help of which they are formed, and the functional load of the described language units in the literary texts of Yu.N. Shestalova. As a result, the authors came to the conclusion that the discovered occasionalisms can be considered potential words, since they are created on the model of words already functioning in the Russian language, and the individual author’s effect in the context is created not so much by the structural elements of the new formations, but by the semantics of their constituent components. Use of Yu.N. Shestalov’s potential units of language are determined by the need to convey to the reader intimate thoughts that help to feel the artistic images being created.

Keywords: Yuvan Nikolaevich Shestalov; occasionalism; potential word; word formation model; word formation methods; complex suffix method; functions of occasional (potential) words
