Abstract. The article presents an analysis of Pyotr Pavlovich Ershov’s prose cycle «Autumn Evenings» (1850) from the point of view of a metapoetic approach. The relevance of this study is due to the fact that modern philological science actively uses new approaches to the study of the process of creativity and self-reflection of the author, but the work of P.P. Ershova is on the periphery of this process. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the authors of the article, based on the material of the prose cycle «Autumn Eveningsv, which is considered as a metapoetic text, and also based on the epistolary heritage of the writer, reveal the negative attitude of P.P. Ershov to the aesthetic principles of the «natural school» that emerged in the 1840s, and come to the conclusion that the poet remains within the framework of the romantic tradition. The Ershov cycle is a late example of prose cyclization of the «evening» type. Structurally, the individual stories of the cycle are enclosed in a frame, which represents the judgments, comments, and disputes of the narrators about a particular story. It is the discussions of the hero-storytellers (Bezrukovsky, Academician, Lesnyak, Nemets, Taz-bashi), which form the framework for the main stories, that contain metapoetic material. The meeting participants discussed such aspects of creativity as the purpose, subject and conditions of presentation, that is, the linguistic design of stories. The subject of creativity, according to P.P. Ershov, love, dream, joy, sadness should appear, those categories that reveal the entire multidimensionality of human nature, and do not reduce it only to social contradictions, which, according to the writer, is characteristic of the «natural school». The article indicates that P.P. Ershov affirms such principles of creativity as spirituality, romantic sublimity, and dreaminess. The authors also note the importance of the religious aspect in the metapoetics of P.P. Ershova. The writer’s creative process is a combination of the earthly and heavenly worlds, and categories such as miracle and mystery acquire their usefulness only within the framework of religious discourse.
