Abstract. The article reveals the meaning and variety of definitions of «folklore». The relevance of this work lies in the disclosure of the problem of the conceptual formation of «folklore» through the study of the works of outstanding folklorists. It is proposed to consider the most stable and time-bound, rooted concepts of folklore.

In this paper, a culturological analysis of the concept of «folklore» is carried out. The study of folklore is an important part of ethnocultural research, which is not only addressed to the past, but also devoted to the education of the future generation, which inherits and preserves, enriches and modifies the spiritual foundations of society’s life, its ethnic, national identity through traditions, values, customs. Folklore is an iconic and symbolic expression of traditions in the everyday culture of the people, it is an important way of preserving and broadcasting ethnic culture, which is used during the change of generations in the rapidly changing modern world.

The topic of this article is related to his dissertation research aimed at studying the theoretical significance of understanding folklore as a cultural phenomenon.

The author of the article concludes that folklore is a reflection of the spiritual and moral values and ideals of the people, expresses its original and national character, popularization of knowledge about it, is one of the important parts of preserving the cultural heritage of the ethnos.
