Abstract. In this article, an attempt was made to identify and analyze lexical units that serve to express one of the main categories — the category of time in the Tatar written sources of the 17th–18th centuries. It examines a variety of linguistic means used in written records, including the lexeme vakyt (time). The relevance of the work lies in the fact that until now the means and methods of representing this category in the Tatar written sources of the 17th–18th centuries have not been allocated. Our research will reveal the peculiarities of the linguistic picture of time in these sources. The purpose of our article is to highlight the features of the functioning of the lexical means of expressing the category of time in the Tatar written sources of the 17th–18th centuries. The lexico-semantic features of the factual material of the Tatar written sources during the study were divided into six groups:
- Lexical units, meaning long periods of time, its infinity: dәver (century, era), zaman (era), etc.
- Names of time, associated with the years: duңgyz ely (year of the pig, elan ely (year of the snake), etc.
- Names of the seasons: yaz (spring), yay (summer), etc.
- Names of the months: sәfәr ae (month of safar).
- Lexical units, meaning time intervals: day, day. For example: tөnә (yesterday), irtәn (in the morning), etc.
- Lexical units, meaning hourly intervals: sәgat (hour).
The undertaken research made it possible to identify the main regularities of the functioning of lexical units with the meaning of “time” and to establish the dominant features. This analysis leads to the conclusion that the Tatar written sources of the 17th–18th centuries. have a rich system of lexical units with the meaning of secular and annual periods of time. Among them, an important place is occupied by Arab-Persian borrowings.
