Abstract. The article describes the results of the study of value structures among students on the example of a sociological study of students of Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management. The object of the study is the student’s personality. The subject of the study is the terminal and instrumental values of students. The basis of the methodology for analyzing the hierarchy of values among students was factor analysis and nonparametric scaling (Alscal). Students’ life values are presented as a specific hierarchical structure. This structure reflects the goals and means of students and corresponds to the conditions of the environment in which they are located. The values themselves represent a hierarchy of terminal and instrumental values (values of goals and values of means). In the course of the research, the following tasks were solved: a sociological survey of students on the subject of preferred and rejected terminal and instrumental values was conducted using the Rokich value questionnaire. Correlation analysis of respondents’ responses. The values that are most correlated with each other are identified (the correlation coefficient is not lower than 0.5) and based on this, a factor analysis was carried out and latent factors were identified. Using regression coefficients of latent factors, nonparametric scaling was carried out and hierarchies of value structures for each course of study were identified. Based on the results of the factor analysis and nonparametric scaling, it is possible to conditionally describe the social portrait of a modern student based on the hierarchy of values and value orientations. The modern student puts the realization of his opportunities, material and social status on the basis of higher education in the first place. Higher education acts both as the main factor and as the main value that determines further successful advancement on the career ladder. Of no small importance for a modern student is the creation of a family, to live in harmony with oneself and others with an optimistic view of the future. A sense of independence from others is of no small importance.
