Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the possibilities and peculiarities of a complex text analysis combining the study of a meaningful lexico-semantic field and the verbal sequence including components of this field. The authors believe that field and traditional stylistic approaches to exploring components of literary text do not exclude each other; on the contrary, they are compatible, can complement and mutually enrich each other and in the most difficult cases cannot be used independently and do work only in a complex. This idea is proved by the example of the analysis of the lexico-semantic field of moral assessment and the verbal sequence of character’s characteristic in F.M. Dostoevsky’s novel «Notes from the Underground». Already at the stage of determining the quantity of words in the lexico-semantic field of the literary text it is necessary to constantly refer to the context and verbal sequences. Frequently only the analysis of a verbal sequence involving a certain word makes it possible to uniquely determine whether it belongs to the field being studied. This is especially true for polysemantic words. A verbal sequence can also determine the place of a word in a field structure: for example, words with enantiosemia cannot be refered to a negative or positive field area without analysis of the verbal sequences. The lexico-semantic field shows how components of the verbal sequence are connected in the language. It refers to the level of background knowledge, cultural context. Only the complex analysis of lexico-semantic field and verbal sequences can help to find components changing its’ meaning in text, to determine its’ role in creation of ideological content and figurative system of text.
