Abstract. The article is devoted to the consideration of such a phenomenon of Russian culture as «Soviet rock» and, in particular, the place of women in rock music. in the minds of most people, rock music is a «man’s» thing. Rock music does not fit into the sphere of «women’s affairs» and does not cause approval in society, since it is physically difficult and is not related to a woman’s need to demonstrate her beauty. The main motives that guide female representatives in choosing the role of a rock music performer were identified and analyzed. Such motives include the following: awareness of the weakness of the author’s material, which is not able to compete in classical, jazz, pop or popular niches, the need for truth-seeking, the search for reliable support in the face of a masculine environment, social mimicry, acting as a way of protection, compensation for their own plainness, the desire to focus on their feminine side against the background of men. It was found that initially in Soviet rock music, the image of the performer wore masculine features. The need to demonstrate masculinity is related to ensuring safety from sexual assaults. And also, in order to gain authority, a woman had to show interest in «male» pursuits (cars, motorcycles, alcohol), which led to the fact that a woman became «her boyfriend», and at the same time was not considered as a woman. In addition, a female rock musician should not be outwardly attractive and sexy, so as not to provoke jealousy from the audience. Masculinization was the process of forming stable patterns of behavior characteristic of a man, through imitation of men in the style of clothing, in the manner of bearing, in everyday habits, including smoking, swearing, alcohol consumption. It is established that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the masculine strategy of the image was replaced by the queer strategy.
