Abstract. The subject of research in this article is the national mentality, some basic concepts of the national culture of Kalmyks and their role in the system of nationally specific stereotypes of Kalmyk speech behavior. Folk customs and habits inherent in representatives of a particular society may not always be understandable to speakers of other cultures. In every culture, there are unwritten norms, informal ideas about «how to behave» in a particular country. Here, the opinions of even speakers of the same culture are not so clear. The style of behavior in society quite accurately reflects the specifics of consciousness and lifestyle of representatives of a certain culture.

Tolerance, politeness, modesty, and restraint of representatives of the Kalmyk linguistic and cultural community can be identified as dominant in the system of rules regulating behavior in different communication situations. Role functions, gender, age, social status and typical characterological personality traits determine the ethnic style of behavior of Kalmyks.

Kalmyk communication etiquette determines placement in space, gestures, sequence of actions, verbal formulas, tactics, prohibitions, etc. Their use is regulated by such fundamental characteristics as «right»/«left», «male»/«female», «senior»/«junior», «marital status».

The Kalmyk mentality can be seen in a special way in his concept of life, which incorporates Buddhist philosophy and folk philosophical and ethical ideas. To reconstruct a holistic portrait of the national image of the world, it is necessary to understand the fundamental principles and categories on which this concept of life, presented in folklore and created by literature, is built. The national image (picture) of the world of the Kalmyks, captured in folklore and literature, presents an original concept of life, which is created by religious Buddhist philosophical and folk ethical ideas.

Keywords: communicative behavior; communication; non-verbal means of communication; national character; social symbolism; religious consciousness
